Angelo di Grazia
Licodia Eubea, Sicily
Angelo di Grazia began his own project in 2019, planting vines in his hometown of Licodia Eubea, in the southernmost part of the Provincia di Catania, with the aim of reviving and highlighting a long-forgotten terroir.
His path into wine began when he left Sicily to study oenology in Piedmont. After graduating, he returned home to work for Etna legend Salvo Foti, where he spent 15 years refining his craft. In 2018, he moved on to become chief winemaker at Tornatore, while simultaneously launching his own eponymous label with his wife Federica.
Angelo’s personal project centres on one hectare in nearby Vizzini, planted on family land where his grandfather once grew wheat and olives. Perched at 630 metres above sea level on the slopes of the extinct volcano Monte Altore, the site is defined by a complex mix of basalt, granite, and white calcareous clay.
With over 15 years of experience across Sicily, Angelo has witnessed firsthand the growing impact of climate change. Rising temperatures pose a significant challenge, particularly in preserving acidity and battling overt ripeness. Looking to the past for answers, he identified three almost-lost native varieties; Recuno, Cutrera and Rucignola, known for their ability to retain freshness in heat. He planted these alongside Carricante, which he uses to temper and balance acidity.
In the vineyard, Angelo follows organic principles with a strong emphasis on biodiversity and soil health. Low tillage, cover cropping, and the planting of walnut trees to discourage bird damage all form part of his holistic, regenerative approach — one rooted in deep respect for land and history.
